Summary: Sometimes, Kahlan dreams about it, about being someone other than herself.
-o-
Sometimes, Kahlan dreams about it, about being someone other than herself. In amongst the dreams of her sister, her mother, of losing everyone she's ever loved, she dreams about someone else's soul in her body, possessing her entirely while Kahlan can only watch and feel and know what it's like to be loved.
When she's Vivian in her dreams, everything is softer, faded and less real. Like the world is something she sees through water or through glass, wavering and muted, distant and distorted. Only Kieran is real, is clear, is there, and Vivian-Kahlan's heart leaps to see him, to feel his hands on her, his lips on hers, knowing that he is hers in every way that counts.
Those dreams leave her bereft when she wakes, longing for something she's never known and never will.
It doesn't matter how many times she tells herself that it's a fantasy, nothing but a fading figment and a long forgotten dream. It's nothing that will ever come to pass, nothing that ever can come to pass with Richard. Kahlan knows the penalty that Kieran and Vivian paid for loving too deeply, too passionately to resist temptation, and it's a price that is just too high to pay.
When she dreams she remembers. She remembers how (her) Vivian's heart beat faster when (Richard) Kieran touched her, how (Richard's) Kieran's hands felt as they ghosted over her skin. She remembers the heat of him, the taste of him when his lips pressed against hers. She remembers breathing (Richard's) Kieran's breath, drinking him down into her lungs and letting the essence of him fill her, bringing her back to life when death had been too cold, too empty without him.
She remembers the paradise before the fall, the bliss of it, the hope. Sometimes - in the darkness of the night just before dawn's early light creeps over the horizon, in that perfect silent stillness before even the birds awake - she remembers what it's like to soar, carried aloft with the certainty that no one had ever felt like this before, that no one could. She knows what it's like to have (Richard's) Kieran's hands slip beneath her bodice, to touch and caress her breasts. She knows how it feels to ache for him, and to have (Richard's) Kieran's length push into her, that small, sharp pain before pleasure overwhelms her. To have him watch her, his hazel eyes so full of love for her, so full of hope for the future as he makes love to her, as he makes her his.
But Amfortas stole that future away and he left nothing but dust and despair behind, two lost souls searching for each other.
Kahlan twists in her sleep, a faint sigh of protest leaving her lips. She sleeps and she dreams, and in her dreams, Kieran's eyes stay hazel as she finds her release, and as he finds his in her body. In her dreams, he claims her body but she never possesses his soul.
In her dreams, she knows (Kieran's) Richard's touch, Richard's taste, the feel of Richard within her. In her dreams, Richard loves her and his love is stronger than anything, stronger than death, stronger than a Confessor's power, Kahlan's and Vivian's both.
And that is the most dangerous fantasy of all. Dreams are not, cannot be, reality, and this is one dream Kahlan can never permit herself.
In her dreams, Richard loves her beyond hope and beyond reason, but when she's awake, she loves him too much to risk making Vivian's mistakes.
