It's not strange, it's good. It raised lots of questions and 'but whys' and 'but surelys'.
In fact, if you want gut-reaction input from my only half-awake brain (7.30 and I'm taking my first breather since 6 am) it's almost worth leaving it right there. In a way, anything you add to it (will he recover, who's been holding him?) will be a let-down.
At least this way a poor reader can make up the ending for herself (happy or sad, whatever).
