When Abby dreams now, she's swift and sure. Everything is clear, every movement in the distance screaming out to her. The dust-laden winds carry the scent of prey to her, sharp and metallic on her tongue.

Those are the nightmares, when Abby wakes with the taste of blood in her mouth.

But there are other dreams, better ones. The down covering her scales lengthens, becomes more defined; she stretches her fingers, watching the gleaming feathers form.

She soars.

When she wakes, she's grounded again, staring at the ceiling. Connor shifts beside her, fingers twitching.

She wonders if he's flying, too.
