Cara spotted it first, coming to an abrupt stop. Her hand flew to her agiel, her eyes darting towards Richard and a scowl forming on her face.

"What is it?" Richard asked.

"My agiels - they're no longer working."

Zedd narrowed his eyes in concern. "Are you sure?" He didn't wait for an answer, rolling up his sleeves and muttering arcane words under his breath.

Nothing happened.

"Huh." He didn't sound worried, and Richard let his hand ease away from the hilt of his sword.

"What is it?" he asked again. Zedd didn't answer him immediately, muttering under his breath again, weaving his fingers in symbols Richard half-recognised.

"We appear to be in an area devoid of magic."

"How is that possible?" Kahlan asked right next to Richard's ear. He twisted towards her, taking in the worry on her face.

"I've heard of such things," Zedd mused, more to himself, Richard thought, than to them. "Ripples in the world sent out by the Keeper's rifts. Like eddies in the water," he explained at their confused looks. "Sometimes they're magnified as they move, troughs and dips, and sometimes they leave still, dead water in their wake. I think we're in one of the still spots."

"So we're defenceless?" Cara asked, her scowl deepening.

"Hardly that, my dear. We won't be able to use any magic, true, but nor will anything be able to use magic against us."

"And if someone dies?" she snapped, giving Richard a pointed look.

"No one's going to die, Cara," he said patiently. "Do we push on until we're past it? Go back?"

Zedd shook his head. "That could be several leagues, and we have no idea how far we came before Cara spotted it."

"What do you suggest we do?" Richard asked, pulling out the compass to check. It stayed still and inert.

"It will work once we're through this," Zedd assured him. "It's late. I think we should camp for the night, push on at first light."

Richard nodded, taking in their surroundings. "It's defensible," he said, ignoring Cara's huff. "We'll need some wood for the fire, though."

"Tonight we'll have to light it with a flint," said Zedd, sounding disgruntled.

Richard swallowed a grin.

They split up, Zedd and Cara taking one direction and Richard and Kahlan another. Richard suspected Cara wanted to quiz Zedd on how soon her agiels would work again - she kept touching them, her expression almost wistful.

He and Kahlan were alone; he couldn't remember the last time.

He bent to pick up another stick; when he straightened, Kahlan had disappeared. His lips were already parting to call her name when her hand reached out and snagged him, pulling him closer to where she was hidden in the shade of an ancient tree. Her mouth settled over his, warm and soft, her fingers drifting into his hair.

"We're alone," she murmured against his mouth, and his lips curled up into a smile.

"Yes." He kissed her again, and her lips parted, her tongue pressing delicately against his. In spite of the uncertainty of her touch - or maybe because of it - a surge of pure heat went through him, and he pulled her closer, suddenly greedy for her hands on him, for the taste and feel of her.

"There's no magic," she said, pulling back to look at him, her hair tousled and her eyes wide and vulnerable. "We could..."

The thought left him breathless, and her hands dipped lower, suddenly bold. He was already hard and aching; when her fingers slipped into his breeches, her face settled into an expression of half-wonder and half-need.

"This," she said fiercely, her grip tightening, stroking along his length so that he gasped into her hair. "I want this. Please."

It was the please that undid him. He slipped his own fingers beneath her skirt, pressing hot, wet kisses against her mouth as his fingers danced over her soft skin, moving closer and closer to where she burned for him. When he finally pushed his fingers into her, she moaned against his mouth; the sound had him gasping again, her fingers nimble where they flew over his heated flesh.

He lifted her up, her legs wrapping around his waist as she eased him free of his breeches. He slid into her, feeling her flesh clench around him as she cried out in pleasure, faster and faster until they were both lost.

"You took your time," said Zedd crossly, blowing fruitlessly onto the moss he'd gathered and was trying to light the old-fashioned non-magical way.

Cara gave them a long, searching look, not missing the way that Richard's hair was mussed, or the green moss marks left on Kahlan's skirts. And then she grinned, wide and fierce.

"I don't think that's all Richard took," she said.

The end
