There are sixty minutes in an hour, twenty-four hours in a day, seven days a week, fifty-two weeks a year. He's not dumb - he knows the math, and he knows that Grissom is a busy man. There are demands on his time against which Nick can't hope to compete. He knows that.
But it hurts, to see Gris make time for Sara and Warrick while he's left out in the cold, looking in. He tries not to let it get to him, make him bitter. Mostly he succeeds.
Mostly.
Sixty minutes in an hour, and all Nick wants is one.

"It's okay." There's something horrible about Nick's crooked smile, the catch in his voice. "I understand."
He doubts it. He doesn't understand himself what he's doing, why he got into this. And that look's on Nick's face, the anxious one that's always irritated him because Nick's so puppy-eager to please and he's not worth it.
"It's okay," Nick says again, like it's his heart breaking not Nick's, and Nick's heart is most assuredly breaking while he stands there, saying nothing, giving Nick nothing.
"I do." That smile again but Nick's eyes are bright with unshed tears. "You got no time."
