Challenge: Alias show title challenge at
csi100
Pairing: A lot. What can I say? I was feeling eclectic.
Disclaimer: Not mine. If they were... well, Warrick and Nick would be going shirtless more often for a start.
Notes: Cross-posted to
cath_and_nick and Always Thinking for the Cath/Nick ones (surprise, surprise), and to
csi100.
~*~
After Six (Warrick, Nick friendship)
It's after six; his shift was over two hours ago but there's no end in sight. It's been a rough night, one of those that come round too damned often in his opinion. He'd give anything for a cup of Sanders' coffee right now, but the pot is empty and not even he is willing to gamble on Sanders' erratic temper tonight.
The seat cushions shift and a heavenly scent fills his nostrils. He cracks open one eyelid to see Nick. Man needs a shave.
Man has coffee. And donuts. And is willing to share.
His shift - and mood - improves.
~*~
Façade (Nick)
Sometimes Nick feels invisible. It's not a comfortable feeling, which is why he overreacts, makes jokes that fall flat, flirts with Sara, competes with Warrick.
Irritates Grissom.
It's not intentional. He knows that the frat-boy routine bugs the Bugman but it's a comfortable role to slip into when he's feeling unsure. He thinks Catherine might get it, although he can't imagine Catherine ever thinking she doesn't matter.
She gives him a wry look, tells him he needs to figure out who he is. He knows who he is.
He's Nick Stokes, CSI.
It's as good a mask as any other.
~*~
Snowman (Nick/Sara flirting. Nick/Catherine implied, Sara/Grissom implied)
She snorts at his latest opening. "You've got more chance of snow in Texas." He doesn't have the heart to tell her it snows in Texas every winter - just not much and not for long.
It's a game they play. He flirts, she shoots him down. Unless Grissom's there, then she responds with the kind of heavy-handedness that tells him that it's not a game she plays very often.
He's much better at it. Not even Sara has noticed that he usually makes a point of flirting with her in front of Catherine.
It's one way of passing the time.
~*~
The Getaway (Catherine/Nick)
There's a park bench where she likes to sit and watch Lindsey playing on the swings. It's a retreat, somewhere she can sit and not think for a while but even here ghosts crowd her.
He sits beside her and for a moment it's not his face she sees, but Eddie's, and she tenses up with grief and irritation at being disturbed.
For once he's smart enough to turn off the charm and says nothing. His face, when she steals a glance, is thoughtful, and his warm thigh presses against her own.
After a while, she gets used to it.
~*~
Blowback (Sara/Nick, Sara/Grissom)
Afterwards he blames himself for not seeing what was coming, for being so blind to what was going on underneath his nose that he was caught completely unawares. It's not like him to be so oblivious to the undercurrents - that's Grissom's schtick, not his.
Strange then that Grissom's the one who saw it, although in the end both of them were powerless; him to resist when Sara finally responded to his flirting and Grissom to respond to hers at all.
But when the explosion comes, it shatters his life, not theirs. They played with fire, and he's the one burnt.
