Summary: She is so cold without him.
-o-
She doesn't sleep. She has never slept and yet sometimes she still dreams of him, thoughts that flit when she is usually so focused, memories that cut deeper than any knife.
She remembers the scent of his skin, crisp and fresh, that first morning, and the way the warm of it rose up to greet her in the early light. She closes her eyes and can feel his hands again, the gentle strength in them as they ghosted over her skin, hungry to know her. His touch woke an answering heat in her, warmth when before there had been nothing, nothing but an empty void, barren and hopeless.
It aches to relive those first, heady days they were together. When she closes her eyes she can still feel his mouth pressed against her neck again, the way it was first warm and then heated as the sun rose in the sky above them, and they how fell to the earth, tangled together in its blazing light.
She remembers their first kiss, the way he breathed her in, greedy for the very breath that gave him life. How he touched her hair, her face, her heart.
He was her first and her foremost, the one to keep her company on those long, lonely days when she walked the earth. He was the one to keep her grounded, to keep her safe when she would have soared to the sun or lost patience with the world. He was the one to keep her warm when the universe was so cold, and she burned for him as he burned for her.
He was her first, but he was not her only, and for that he has never forgiven her.
The jealousy that consumed him drove him mad; he brought death into the world for one reason only and one reason only - to take her children from her as he felt they had taken her from him.
Her children live so briefly now, and she grieves each and every loss. But most of all she grieves for him, for her Keeper who keeps faith with her no longer. For the flame of their once eternal love, brought low and extinguished by his rage.
Now he burns alone in the belly of the earth, sealed there forever by her bitter tears.
And she is so cold without him.
