ETA: One of the perils of using Dreamwidth's posting interface to post to multiple journals is that I keep referring to 'here', forgetting that the cross posting thing means that people won't know where I'm posting from and hence where the hell 'here' is.
Please replace any references to 'here' with 'DW' or 'Dth' or any other acronym for Dreamwidth you would prefer.
Also, I hadn't realised how long this was, so there is now a cut. Sorry!
There seems to be another iteration going on of people acquiring DW accounts (and I do have codes if anyone wants one). I know
temaris says the acronym makes her think 'Doctor Who' rather than 'Dreamwidth' but unfortunately the suggested alternative - Dth - sounds like 'death' in my head and now I've heard it, I cannot unhear.
However, that means there are accounts who are friending me and giving access on DW and I have no idea who they are. I suspect they're LJ accounts I have friended, or have me friended over there, but I have no idea if that's accurate or who they are because the username and profiles give little if anything away.
So it seems to a good time to clear the air and have a clear out.
Posting
I tend to cross post to three journalling sites - DW, LJ and insanejournal - usually using semagic's cross post function, although fic gets posted via DW because then I can edit the inevitable mistakes easily. I have an account on journalfen as well, but that's for reading comms over there; I don't cross-post to JF and my flist there is light for a reason.
However, I don't post everything to all three sites. Fic gets posted to all three; flocked posts probably will be posted to all three, but sometimes I post only to LJ and sometimes to DW. LJ is my default, still, and sometimes it's because I forget to post to multiple journals in semagic, instead just hitting 'post', and then just can't be arsed to repost to the other two I've missed. My life is not that exciting.
Sometimes I only post to DW because that's where I'm comfortable posting. I'm also tentatively thinking about doing that 'DW posting only' thing, where in April you post original content to DW only and keep it exclusive to DW for three weeks. Tentatively because I'm not entirely comfortable with the whole 'posting exclusively to somewhere where not everyone is comfortable' thing but otoh, DW is quite shiny and I want to share the shiny and also if I set myself a concrete task I may actually finish fic to have something exclusive to post. And deadlines are good, for me.
Insanejournal is that other one, the one I forget I have, so I don't ever post there and not to the other two.
Reading
I read LJ pretty much every day and I have acquired the habit of reading DW every day as well. There's a lot of overlap between my LJ and DW reading pages, meaning I see posts more than once.
I don't read insanejournal anywhere near as frequently.
The Issues As I See Them
I'm thinking that it might be smart to take people off my default reading filter on LJ if they cross post everything to DW and read them on DW instead. That's because I have a default reading filter on LJ and I'm all about the lazy. This will not mean removing people from my flist (unless you friend me over here and then defriend me over on LJ, which I take to be a very strong 'read me on DW, not LJ!' indication). So if you post to DW but do most of your reading on LJ, you'll still see my locked posts, the ones to which you would have had access anyway. I just won't see yours unless I actively go looking for them.
I will, however, see them on DW instead. However - because there are a lot of howevers - maybe you're someone who, like me, doesn't necessarily post everything to DW. Maybe you use semagic and sometimes hit 'post' instead of choosing 'post to multiple journals' from the file menu and then think 'oh fudgesticks' before deciding it's not important. Maybe you use DW's cross posting function but still prefer people to comment over on LJ. Maybe you're over on DW on a supersekrit spy mission and don't want to post anything to your DW that links back to your LJ.
Maybe you think I'm that other alyse entirely and never meant to give me access over here. Maybe you're an entirely different Susie Q Fangirl with the same username as someone I read over on LJ.
The Solution
Tell me.
If you cross post everything to DW and LJ, I'll filter you off my default reading filter over on LJ and only read you here. You'll still see my posts but I won't see yours twice.
If you cross post but would prefer most of your interaction to take place on LJ, let me know. I'll probably remove my subscription to your journal here (so I won't read it here as well as on LJ) but still give you access to my stuff here in case you like reading things twice ::g::
If you have a supersekrit identity, let me know who you were on LJ. I'm not necessarily psychic. Scary, sometimes, yes, but not psychic ::g:: If it's supersupersekrit and you don't want people to link the two, let me know via PM and, again, let me know where you want me to read you.
If you only have me friended on DW and have only ever had me friended on DW, two things:
- are you sure that this is the alyse you're looking for? ::waves hand mysteriously::
- if so, hi! ::waves hand again, in a non-Jedi fashion::

I'm on DW exclusively, myself (crossposting to IJ as a backup/archive, with comments redirected to DW).

I added you on DW because this is my primary fannish home, and I follow my readlist here every day. Just letting you know where I come from! I'll probably be defriending you on LJ to keep things tidy.

I'll confess I'm sort of testing the water with DW but I have defriended you over there partly to avoid reading duplicate posts and partly to encourage myself to get into the habit of reading over here.
I realise there was probably some initial confusion, although I've now linked my identities in my DW profile.

I've already defriended louisedennis over there, and I'll subscribe here instead.
