The first time Kahlan heard the song of the Night Wisps, she thought her heart would soar with each and every liquid note. And with each note, she thought her very soul would leap from her body, rise up to the heavens until it, too, danced among the stars the way that the Night Wisps seemed to dance, darting and glowing in the cool night breeze. The sound of their joy reached somewhere deep within her, settling into that small, quiet place inside where the sadness still dwelt and left her aching and bereft. She was not yet full grown, her body only just starting to fill out into the curves and height it would reach, and each of her losses was still fresh, written large in her mind, barely borne - the death of her mother, the parting from her sister, the weight of the Midlands as it rested on her small shoulders, knowing what the future held for one such as she. A Confessor.

But the song of the Night Wisps settled deep and it settled well, filling her with a peace so profound that she couldn't find the words for it, and yet she found the words for everything, needing to fill up the adult silences around her so that she didn't have to face the oncoming emptiness that growing up a Confessor held for her.

It was a hard road to travel, that of Confessor. She had always known that, had faced it once her mother was gone and her father changed, no love in his heart for her and Dennee. But now, with the joyous song of the Night Wisps filling her ears and her empty, aching little heart, she finally began to believe that it was a road she could travel on and not get lost.

She closed her eyes tightly and listened to the Night Wisps singing until the nonsense sounds they made made sense, each note a word and each word a welcome.

They sang their names to her, told her the stories of how they came to be, best beloved creatures of the Creator and the most fragile. She squeezed her eyes more tightly closed, listened with all of her might, and there were other stories, other joys and other griefs in those songs that echoed to the heavens, and all of them - love and hope, grief and guilt - were so wondrous that the tears ran down her face until she tasted salt on her lips.

Confessor, they greeted her as they flitted around her, laughter in their voices, and even the sound of that word, Confessor was wondrous when they sang it - wonderful and not to be feared. Tell us. Sing to us of your song.

When she opened her mouth, her voice rang out to match theirs, sound for sound and note for note, and there was joy in that, too - a final and all consuming joy in being a Confessor if it meant having this wonder, too.

Thanks!! Now in the middle of downloading. I know I created an account (mainly to give you more gs) but as I can't find the user name I used and it's rejecting all the ones I would normally pick I'm not signed in so the whole process is probably taking longer than usual!! Anyway - I'm very grateful.
