The sound of raised voices as she heads back to their campsite puts Cara immediately on guard. She reaches for agiels automatically, letting their singing energy soothe her, ready her for battle, as she creeps forward, every sense alert.
So alert that it doesn't take her long to recognise Zedd's dulcet tones, the soothing note in them telling her clearly that the wizard is in trouble with the rest of their party. And whatever it is that he's done, Richard and Kahlan aren't listening, hands flailing in fury - or Kahlan's are, anyway. Richard's simply sitting on a rock, his head in his hands and his entire posture screaming of his utter despair at Zedd.
This should be entertaining.
She slides her weapons away with a smirk, stalking into the clearing with a slink in her step and the light of amusement in her eyes.
"Are we experiencing some marital discord? Already?" she asks, aiming her question at Richard and Kahlan both. She doesn't care which one of them answers her - the important thing is that they catch the sardonic drawl in her voice, the slightly mocking edge to the words.
It's about time something shook them out of the placid, cow-like state that they've spent the last few weeks in, making non-stop doe eyes at each other. Cara's pretty sure that she's mixing metaphors - and livestock - there, but she can't find it in her to care. As long as something stops the dreaminess, she's all for it, no matter what's Zedd's done.
"Richard and Kahlan have some happy news for us, Cara," Zedd says, and while there's a smile on his face, it's strained. The same stress is showing clearly in his voice, and Cara raises one eyebrow at him, not missing the fact that Zedd is trying to spread the pain around a little and not really appreciating being made a distraction from whatever punishment Richard and Kahlan obviously feel like dishing out. "It appears that our happy little family is about to become just that little bit bigger."
She snorts, not at all surprised at the news. Not when Kahlan and Richard have spent their nights sneaking away from the campsite, something she's been thankful for, appreciating the break from wistful sighs and furtive looks even if that break comes with the accompanying giggling.
"Congratulations," she says dryly, aiming her remark at Kahlan this time, who is, after all, the one who's going to spend the next few months vomiting up her toenails.
Kahlan gives her a tight-lipped smile in response, one that doesn't reach her eyes. The expression in them stays flinty as she turns her head to stare accusingly at Zedd. "Just one small problem," she says, the words dropping like stones into Zedd's uncharacteristically guilty silence. "I'm not the one who's expecting."
It takes a second for Cara to get it and then she has to fight back a grin.
Yes. This should be very entertaining. As long as she's not expected to hold Richard's hand during the event. There are limits to a Mord'Sith's loyalty, after all.
